Phelelani Makhanya was born is Stanger, KZN. His work has been published in journals like New Contrast, New Coin, Botsotso Journal, The Kalahari Review and in Brittle Paper. He has performed his poetry at Poetry Africa in 2011 and 2018. He was shortlisted for the 2021 TIME OF THE WRITER POETRY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS Prize. He was the winner of the 2021 Avbob Mini Poetry Prize (reflecting on COVID-19) and came 3rd in the annual 2020 4th Avbob Poetry Prize - English category. Phelelani was shortlisted for the 2021 Red Wheelbarrow Poetry Prize. He has published two poetry collections: THIS TIME I SHALL NOT CRY and MY FATHER'S BLAZER.
