Currently a visiting scholar at Boston College, USA, Joan has recently edited her tenth book of poems to be published by Deep South this year. Under dark under branches was written outside Exeter, UK, where Joan trained as a teacher of the Alexander Technique. Her poems have been published in journals, anthologies of South African poetry and individual books since she was a joint-winner of the SANLAM prize in 1991; she has read at many South African and some international poetry festivals. She edited New Coin for five years and taught on the MA Creative Writing at Rhodes University.
