Gaireyah Fredericks is a local of Paarl. She started writing in 2012 at the Breytenbach Centre in Wellington. Since 2015, she has self-published seven poetry anthologies. She has won awards for acting and scriptwriting, and regularly reads her work at many festivals including the McGregor Poetry Festival and Woordfees. In 2019 she won 2nd place in the AVBOB poetry competition with her poem Dood. She won The Neville Alexander prestige prize for her unselfish contribution to the development of local communities, using language and the validation of Mother tongue as a tool to unite and build bridges. She designed an online workshop series to educate emerging writers about self-publishing, the relationship between the author and their environment, and their work. She holds a BA Honours in Afrikaans from the University of the Western Cape and a Masters in Creative Writing from Rhodes University.
